Unlock your future by attending advocacy training with AAI

How Our Training Works

We believe that skilled advocacy not only benefits you and your client, but is essential to the proper functioning of the legal system and the pursuit of justice. That’s why our 2 to 5 day workshops are designed around the demonstration of high-level, ethical advocacy by instructors with decades of practical experience in court. This includes judges, King’s Counsel (KC) and barristers in a range of practice areas.

Workshops are generic and cross-jurisdictional, though can be tailored towards your specific needs as an advocate. We want to help you develop your own style of advocacy, building on foundational skills that leave your work free of fundamental error.

AAI offers training in both the renowned Inns of Court (Inner Temple, Middle Temple, Lincoln’s Inn, Gray’s Inn) in London, or in the country of your origin, whichever is best suited to your needs.

What is the focus of the workshops?

AAI workshops are built on the three core tenets of good advocacy:

Preparation

High-level advocacy begins with top-tier preparation. We will teach you how to gain a complete familiarity with factual and legal materials, such as statements of case, witness evidence and case law. We’ll also demonstrate how to build trust with clients and/or instructing solicitors at the initial meeting stage, as this is vital if you want to effectively carry out your client’s instructions.

Analysis

We will then show you how to best analyse the details of the case in order to produce a consistent case theory. This includes working on your written advocacy skills, showing you how to prepare a well-structured case outline, and how to build out a logical factual matrix to analyse each element of a claim and defence.

w
Performance

Advocacy is the art of persuasion. So heavy emphasis in our workshops will be put on enhancing your performance skills in the courtroom. This includes delivering opening and closing statements, conducting evidence in chief and re-examination, and navigating the unwritten rules of etiquette that abound in the legal profession.

How will I be taught?

There are four main stages to how we run our expert-led sessions, one-on-one consultations and practical workshops:

  • Instruction: first, we will provide an overview of the skill in question, running through the various approaches you could take.
  • Demonstration: next, we will give a practical demonstration of the skill or task being discussed. For example, our instructors may deliver an opening statement or conduct a cross-examination.
  • Performance: then, it’s your turn. You’ll be asked to deliver your own version of the task at hand, informed by the demonstration you’ve just received.
  • Review: finally, your instructor will give an objective assessment of your performance, going over the things you got right and the areas that could be improved.

On top of the workshops, you’ll also receive exclusive networking opportunities with UK legal professionals, building connections that can help you in the next stage of your career.
